"What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient... highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks; right in there somewhere." - Cobb.
This is how I define 'Inception'.
It all starts with an idea, and then the idea grows, till at some point it takes over...and then you realize that your subconscious is much more alive than you thought.
On July 8, 2010, when Inception was released worldwide, the world was unknown to this idea. In the first few days of the movie's release, Nolan face a lot of criticism, but as time passed, the world realized how great this concept was, and it spread so much that today, Inception is 40th in the list of highest grossing Hollywood movies. Then came the big question, what if all this was possible?
When asked about how he got this idea, Nolan had said,"The era of movies such as the Matrix, The Thirteenth Floor, Memento were based on principles that the world around you might not be real. Taking inspiration from that, I came up with this idea, a movie in which the protagonist infiltrates the subconscious of his targets to steal their secrets, or to implant the idea, to carry out INCEPTION.
The theme of the movie is based around people sharing a dream space, a multi-dimensional layer of interconnected dreams in the subconscious of the target, making the target believe thieves are the projections, in the process, carrying out inception.
That's enough talk about the idea, let's talk a bit about the story. A brief synopsis-
Cobb (DiCaprio) and Arthur (Gordon-Levitt) are 'extractors', professional thieves you might say, who extract ideas out of the target's subconscious. A Japanese businessman, Saito, hires the two to perform 'inception' in the mind of his ailing competitor, Maurice Fischer's son, Robert Fischer (Murphy). In return for his services, Saito offers Cobb clearance from a murder charge. and allowance into the USA Cobb assembles his team- Eames (Hardy), Yusuf (Rao), and Ariadne (Page), each having their own specialties. The rest of the movie is a 2 hour thriller of interconnected dreams and the quest of the 'extractors' to carry out inception. To prevent spoilers, I am not revealing any other part of the story. You have to see it to experience it.
Coming back to the original question, is all of this possible?
Apparently, yes. Some researchers in the USA have been studying the dream worlds and it is said that possible dream world can be created within a person's subconscious. Whether inception is possible or not, that is another question.
Now, from a common man's view. You love sci-fi thrillers? You love new ideas in cinema? You love Christopher Nolan? Then this is a must-watch film for you.
When I first saw it, I was amazed at the complexity of the film. Everything was so unreal that it left me with chills down my spine. The performances by the cast were amazing, especially Marion Cotillard's role as Mal, Cobb's deceased wife who kept appearing..oops, spoilers.
Anyways,
THE VERDICT:
"You're waiting for a train. A train that'll take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you. But you can't know for sure. Yet it doesn't matter. Now, tell me why?"
Because you'll be watching Inception...
That sums it up.
Overall Rating: 9.2/10
